About the Author
James Hilton, was born on September 9, 1900 in Leigh, Lancashire. His father John moved with the family to London where James attended various schools and edited and contributed to the school magazine. As an undergraduate he wrote his first novel, Catherine Herself in 1920. After leaving university in 1921, he worked with a Dublin newspaper. During this period the financial independence helped him to produce several more novels. In 1933, he wrote Lost Horizon. The book was awarded the Hawthornden Prize. The mythical paradise of Shangri-La in the book became a household word. Many of his books became worldwide hit movies. In 1933, he also wrote Goodbye Mr Chips an endearing story about an English school teacher as a tribute to his own father, who was the headmaster of a school. ‘Warming to the heart and nourishing to the spirit...The most profoundly moving story that has passed this way.’ So wrote the critic Alexander Wollcott when the book was published in America.
