Crime and Punishment

Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Crime and Punishment is a novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, first published in 1866. It is the second of Dostoyevsky's full-length novels following his return from ten years of exile in Siberia. The plot of Crime and Punishment is probably familiar to many. An impoverished former student, Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov lives in St. Petersburg.
Raskolnikov is a nihilist, driven by a utilitarian prospective, he contemplates committing a terrible crime. Dostoyevsky explores psychology of crime and punishment and focuses on what lies between the two end points. Raskolnikov’s inner world is full of doubts, deliria and despair—partly a result of his utter disregard of social norms.
Alienated from society, he is forced to face his tormenting guilt almost completely on his own. Pretty illustrations by Dmitrii Rybalko provide you with new impressions from reading this legendary story.

About the Author

Fyodor Dostoyevsky was a prominent Russian novelist and philosopher born on November 11, 1821, in Moscow, Russia. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest psychological novelists in world literature.
Dostoyevsky's works often delve into complex psychological and existential themes, exploring the depths of human nature, morality, and the struggles between good and evil. His writing is known for its profound philosophical insights, intense emotional depth, and intricate character studies.
Some of his most famous novels include "Crime and Punishment," "The Brothers Karamazov," "The Idiot," "Demons" (also known as "The Devils" or "The Possessed"), and "Notes from Underground." These works are celebrated for their exploration of existential and moral dilemmas, as well as their portrayal of the social and political landscape of 19th-century Russia.
Dostoyevsky's own life was marked by personal struggles, including financial difficulties, the loss of loved ones, and his own brushes with the law. He was arrested and sentenced to death for his involvement with a group of intellectuals advocating for social and political reform. However, his sentence was commuted to hard labor in Siberia, an experience that deeply influenced his writing.
