A moving historical novel inspired by the German occupation of the Channel Islands during WW2. This is a story of courage, resilience and everyday acts of defiance from ordinary people forced to live in an extraordinary time.
The USA Today bestseller!
June 1940
While her little sister Rosie is sent to the UK to keep her safe from the invading German army, Estelle Le Maistre is left behind on Jersey to help her grandmother run the family farm. When the Germans occupy the island, everything changes and Estelle and the islanders must face the reality of life under Nazi rule.
Interspersed with diary entries from Rosie back on the mainland, the novel is also inspired by real life stories from the author’s own family who were both on the island during the occupation and in London during the Blitz and is a true testament to the courage and bravery of the islanders.

About the Author

I am a USA TODAY bestselling author of historical fiction and write for One More Chapter, a division of HarperCollins. I was born and live in Jersey in the Channel Islands and am lucky enough to be able to set most of my books here.
My 2023 First World War novel, The Poppy Sisters was an Amazon First Reads Editor’s Pick. The Poppy Field and An Island at War set during the Nazi Occupation of Jersey were both USA TODAY bestsellers.
The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied by German forces in the Second World War. That history and the stories from family and friends I heard growing up also inspired me to write The Beekeeper's War and another novel set during that dark time in the island’s history, Neighbours at War.
My first historical novel, Broken Faces was described by Good Housekeeping Magazine as, ‘One to Watch’. I'm also the author behind the Mrs Boots trilogy inspired by another woman from Jersey, Florence Boot, the woman behind the Boots the Chemist empire.
I live near the beach and two years ago swapped my leaky writing shed for a shiny new studio where I spend most days plotting and planning and occasionally writing my books with at least one of my three rescue dogs for company.
